The Center on Ecotourism and Sustainable Development
is a non-profit research institution whose mission is to design, monitor, evaluate, and improve ecotourism and sustainable tourism practices and principles. Its policy-oriented research focuses on ecotourism as a tool for poverty alleviation and biodiversity conservation, as well as socially and environmentally responsible tourism practices.

The Ecumenical Coalition on Tourism (ECOT) was founded in 1982 as a response to the rapidly rising growth in tourism, which, as the Coalition observed, wreaked more havoc than bring benefits to the countries that the tourists were visiting. It was co-founded by the churches in the regions of Asia, Africa, the Caribbean, Latin America, Middle East, Pacific, and works with various networks from all the regions mentioned. It maintains active working links with church and independent/secular groups in Europe and North America as well. Currently, ECOT has a list of some 75-80 groups that it networks with. It also often coordinates the efforts of these groups and has been involved in forging common approaches to global issues in tourism.
